Practical Introduction to gvSIG - a powerful Open Source Desktop GIS

Terra GIS is offering a one day introductory class (hands on workshop) in Seattle on Tuesday March 29th , 2011. gvSIG is a powerful desktop GIS system that is known for having a user-friendly interface, being able to access the most common data formats, both vector and raster ones. It features a wide range of tools for working with geographic information (query tools, layout creation, geoprocessing, networks, model builder, etc.) and provides excellent cartography and spatial analysis tools, and a wide range of spatial database connectivity. It is an open source project that is published under the GNU General Public License (GPL), which allows its free use, distribution, study and improvement. gvSIG is entirely programmed in Java, can be customized using the Jython scripting language and has a large set of extensions that can expand it’s capabilities such as the 3D Extension, Sextante (raster and vector analysis), Raster and Remote sensing, gvSIG Mobile, NavTable, and gvSIG Mini (for Android phones).
The emphasis of the class will be on general GIS functionalities and geoprocessing (topics 2 and 3 in the list below). The topics of the class are as follows:
| 1. Introduction to Open Source GIS Desktop tools (a short overview) |
|
| - overview of OS desktop tools | |
| - the gvSIG project and it’s community | |
| 2. Practical Introduction to gvSIG and functionalities (emphasis on this topic) |
|
| - exploring and using vector and raster data | |
| - editing of data and attribute tables (edit shape files and attribute data) | |
| - using layouts for cartography and printing maps | |
| 3. Geoprocessing with gvSIG (emphasis on this topic) | |
| - gvSIG geoprocessing tools (intersect, union, erase, buffer etc.) | |
| - geoprocessing using the Sextante extension and model builder | |
| 4. gvSIG and spatial databases (less emphasis on this topic) | |
| - connecting to ArcSDE, Oracle spatial , PostGIS, MySQL | |
| - exporting data to spatial databases | |
| 5. Customizing your gvSIG installation (overview- less emphasis on this topic) |
|
| - project and user settings | |
| - scripting options and automation | |
| - extensions | |
| - user resources | |
The class will be presented by Karsten Vennemann who has several years of experience with FOSS4G software and has lead numerous workshops in GIS throughout his 12 year career in GIS.
